Two Figures by a Fountain, from Atonement; composed by Dario Marianelli.

Marianelli’s film scores are beautiful; this much I have known for a few years now. The music from - to name just a few - Atonement and V for Vendetta and Pride & Prejudice is gorgeous: lush and inventive and compelling, somehow.

BUT. It was only today that I found out that Marianelli - can I call you Dario, love? - Dario himself is beautiful. See:

Folks who check out the deleted scenes from the J.J. Abrams film Star Trek will see that Nero’s ship was captured shortly after it destroyed the U.S.S. Kelvin. The captors were none other than the Klingons, who hauled Nero and his crew to “the Klingon prison planet” of Rura Penthe, which was first seen in the excellent Star Trek VI.

While the final version of the film doesn’t mention Rura Penthe by name, it’s clear that it’s the planet mentioned by Uhura in the dorm room scene, where she mentions intercepting and translating a transmission about a Klingon fleet being destroyed by a Romulan ship around “the Klingon prison planet.”

(N.b. in The Undiscovered Country, the judge presiding over Kirk and McCoy’s trial does call Rura Penthe a “penal asteroid,” but we think that was just a mistranslation. :-)
